The Arunachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (APEDA) was created out of the Rural Works Department (RWD) in the year 1996. It's entity till then was an Energy Wing in the Department of RWD. It is now a State Government Agency of the Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh and is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

It is entrusted with the following functions and duties:

As the State Nodal Agency for all the Programs and Schemes connected with Renewable and Non-Conventional Energy Sources, all such programs and schemes sponsored by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India is either executed or routed through it.
